Observe Community Activities

Activities are a common part of nearly any independent living community you'll visit, but the frequency, type, and atmosphere of each property varies greatly. By observing the activities in action, you'll get a feel for the opportunities you'll have as a resident. Don't be afraid to ask if you can participate in the events, too. A hands-on perspective can be invaluable when you're going through the decision-making process. Check out the events calendar, and make sure you ask lots of questions about how they plan and organize their events.

Note the Friendliness of the Staff

Keep an eye on the way staff members interact with the residents. Are they friendly and engaging? Do they make eye contact and appear to have a true passion for their occupation? Meet with several members of management, and ask them about the values and mission of their community. Ask how they cater to residents' specific needs and what they do to accommodate special situations or sudden illnesses and accidents.

Eat On Site

Meal time is an important function at any senior community; it's a social time that brings neighbors together. By eating a meal at the community, you'll be able to taste the cuisine and get a feel for the flavors. You'll also get a better understanding of how life really works there and how welcoming the residents are. Ask members of the senior community what they like about their home and what they wish was different. Make sure you understand hours of operation, how the meal time process works, and what happens if a resident doesn't make it down to meal time for one reason or another.
