How to Downsize When Moving into a Retirement Community

1. Assess Your Needs

Walk around your current living space and evaluate all of the large ticket items like furniture. What do you actually use? What can you do without? Think about the amount of space you have available to you and start to thinning things out. Choose your favorite items and think about how much you will enjoy having them close by.

2. Embrace the Lifestyle

When you retire and move to an independent living community, you are making a huge life change. Embrace the lifestyle in every way! You will be living on a fixed income, but you won't need as many things as you used to have. It all balances out and you will be able to enjoy your new lifestyle to its fullest.

3. Hand Down Items to Your Family

If you have a collection of statues, a lot of jewelry, or a set of china that you won't have room for in your retirement community, now is a great chance to hand things down. It can be fun to choose family members and friends to give these items to so you can watch them enjoy them as much as you have. They will be honored to take your valued items and you will treasure the feeling of handing the items along.

4. Sell or Store What You Won't Need

If you have some things that you don't need and you don't think anyone else in your family would like, try having a garage sale to sell some items. You can use the extra cash you have on hand to travel and enjoy destinations you’ve always wanted to visit!

If there are items you absolutely can't part with but won't have room to keep in your home, try finding a close self storage unit to keep those items safe until you need them again.

5. Organize and De-Clutter

Taking time to organize before you move can make a big difference. Use plastic bins that you can see through, but fit like items together. Designate one tub for decorations and if it doesn't fit, get rid of it. This way you can decide what you really need, what isn't as important, and what you can discard.

Moving to your retirement community in Venice, Florida can be an exciting time, but downsizing is a challenge. Once you see everything in place at your new location, you will be glad you spent the time thinning things out.
